Tampa detectives arrest suspect in fatal hit and run
A man has been arrested in a fatal hit-and-run Saturday that was captured on video, Tampa police said. Fernando Lazaro Lahera Chibas, 18, has been charged with leaving an accident scene with death and tampering with evidence, police said. Omar James Jeter, 22, was walking across Hillsborough Avenue near Lincoln Avenue at 3 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by a dark-colored compact vehicle that then fled the scene. Jeter, who was not in a crosswalk, died at the scene. As a result of media coverage, detectives received an anonymous tip about a vehicle with front end and windshield damage. After identifying Chibas as the driver, detectives interviewed him, and they say he admitted to hitting the victim and leaving the scene, saying he fled because he was scared.Detectives said it did not appear Jeter had been drinking, and had he stayed at the scene, he would not have been charged with a crime.
