ST. PETERSBURG — A 12-year-old boy is facing a felony charge after police said he burglarized Melrose Elementary while the school was closed for Hurricane Irma.
According to a St. Petersburg police report, the boy was seen on surveillance video entering the school through an unlocked door three times during the afternoon and late at night on Sept. 13. Police said he took two fire extinguishers and a laptop from the school.
The report said detectives recognized the boy on the video. He lives near Melrose, located at 1752 13th Ave. S, according to the report.
A school staff member discovered the break-in and notified police on Sept. 14, police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said. Some items were strewn around the scene, she said.
The boy was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of commercial burglary of an unoccupied structure during a state of emergency. The Tampa Bay Times is withholding the boy's name because of his age.
