ST. PETERSBURG — A man accused of stealing a car with a baby inside earlier this week was arrested Thursday morning when officers spotted him in another stolen car, according to St. Petersburg police.
Rashad Webb, 19, was arrested at about 2 a.m. after officers said they spotted him in a rental car that was reported stolen. Webb sped away, but police said they used "stop sticks" — tire-puncturing devices — to disable the vehicle in the 2200 block of 15th Avenue S.
Webb was identified as the man who stole a Toyota Camry on Monday afternoon — with an 8-month-old boy inside — from the Gateway On 4th Apartments at 501 116th Ave. N.
The child’s father told police he ran back into his house around 12:22 p.m. to get his wallet while leaving the engine running and the boy inside.
Police said Webb must have discovered the child while driving south and dropped him off in a baby carrier at the Parkview condos at 800 71st Ave. N.
The child was found by a WFLA-Ch. 8 news crew 27 minutes after the car was reported stolen. They were at that location working on an unrelated story.
Webb faces charges of child abuse, burglary, fleeing and eluding and auto theft, police said. He was being held without bail at the Pinellas County Jail.
