RIVERVIEW — A 3-year-old girl died from injuries received when she darted into a residential street while walking with her mother and was struck by a pickup truck, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Hampton Meadow Way and Legacy Bright Street in the Sanctuary home community, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Brianna Savage was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital South, where she was pronounced dead.
Brianna and her mother were walking their dog with a family friend when the toddler ran into the street and was hit by a black Dodge Ram pickup, the Sheriff's Office said.
The driver of the pickup truck, 33-year-old Christian Madson, told investigators he saw the women walking the dog but did not see Brianna. He pulled over after hearing an impact and only then realized he had struck the child.
Even if he had seen her, Madson likely would not have had time to stop, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nuñez said at the scene.
No charges are expected to be filed against Madson, Nuñez said.
Neighbors said the accident occurred while the mother was walking back from dropping another child off at a school bus stop near the community pool. She immediately picked up her injured daughter and placed her on the sidewalk.
Pat Tritchfield, who lives in the neighborhood, said many children call the area home and it's not known for speeding or cut-through traffic. It's located in a quiet section at the back of the subdivision.
"It's tragic," Tritchfield said, shaking her head. "They say time will heal. No."
