TAMPA — A bicyclist killed when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver early Wednesday has been identified as 45-year-old Aristeo Antonio Pascual of Brandon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Pascual was hit about 3:40 a.m. while riding on the exit ramp from eastbound Interstate 4 to U.S. 301, the Highway Patrol said. He was thrown from his bicycle and died at the scene.
The driver kept going, troopers said.
Christopher Jerimiah Cole, 44, was arrested later Wednesday in connection with the death.
At the scene of the collision, troopers found a lower right grille, right-side mirror and right front fender liner from a 2016 Mercedes 300C and distributed photos of the parts to the news media.
Within hours, the Tampa Police Department received a tip about a Mercedes matching the description at Cole's apartment at 2202 E 20th Ave. in Tampa. Troopers arrived and secured the car.
Shortly after, Cole surrendered at the Highway Patrol headquarters in Tampa and was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
Cole has been arrested seven previous times in Florida, records show, with convictions for grand theft auto and marijuana, cocaine and hallucinogenic drug possession.
