BROOKSVILLE ó A 53-year-old Pasco County man was left in critical condition Friday after he drove his car into the path of a Hernando County school bus, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said Donald Dornfelt of Trilby was driving a 2000 Lincoln four-door westbound on State Road 50 approaching a green light at McKethan Road at about 10:25 a.m. At the light, he turned left and into the path of a school bus travelling eastbound in the outside lane of S.R. 50.
The bus ended up striking the right side of the car, and the entangled vehicles came to rest at the southeast corner of S.R. 50 and McKethan Road, the FHP said.
The bus was carrying 20 Springstead High School students and was driven by Justin Brennan, 71, of Spring Hill. One student suffered minor injuries.
A Hernando County Fire Rescue crew had to use extraction tools to free Dornfelt from the wreckage of the Lincoln, spokesman Alex Lopez said. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
He was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson. A dog that was riding in the car was also injured, Lopez said. It was turned over to Hernando County Animal Services.
