Palm Harbor woman, 23, killed while crossing Seminole Boulevard

SEMINOLE — A 23-year-old Palm Harbor woman was fatally injured when she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle while crossing Seminole Boulevard on Wednesday night, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place at about 8:45 p.m. just north of 53rd Avenue N.

Deputies said Kala Gombos was walked east across Seminole Boulevard when she was struck by a 2000 Toyota 4Runner driven by Dwight Wood, 68, of Lutz. He was driving south in the media lane approaching the intersection.

Gombos was not using the crosswalk at the time, deputies said, and Wood was unable to avoid her or stop in time. She was taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Neither speed nor impairment were appear to be factors in the crash, deputies said. The investigation is continuing.
