Highway Patrol releases name of Zephyrhills man struck, killed by dump truck on U.S. 301

THONOTOSASSA — A 25-year-old Zephyrhills man was killed Wednesday after he was hit by a dump truck while trying to push his disabled car off of U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident happened shortly after 7 a.m. when a school bus stopped in the road’s northbound lanes at St. Francis Lane to pick up a child, troopers said. Damian J. Wellington stopped for the school bus and then his 1997 Nissan 240SX stalled.

As Wellington tried to push the car out of the road, a northbound dump truck struck him from behind, troopers said. The dump truck continued forward and collided with a van.

Wellington died at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.

Troopers said the driver of the dump truck, Walter Bermudez, 58, of Tampa failed to see Wellington because the Nissan’s lights weren’t working. No other injuries were reported.

Officials closed a stretch of the road between McIntosh Road and County Line Road for several hours while troopers investigated the crash.
