Starving and sick puppies dumped on side of busy Tampa road

TAMPA — Four starving puppies covered in rashes were found abandoned in some bushes on a busy roadway Thursday morning, steps away from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

The neglected dogs could have been surrendered at the shelter. Instead they were dumped near where Cimino Avenue turns into Howard Avenue, according the Humane Society’s director Sherry Silk.

"We want to prosecute who did this," Silk said during a Facebook live broadcast. "You can come in and bring your animals here. You don’t dump animals in a busy road."

The animals were found around 10 a.m. The rescue group wrote on Facebook it was thankful the dogs were found before they wandered into traffic. The group is now offering $1,000 to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of whoever is responsible.

"Obviously they’re suffering," Silk said as she stroked one of the dogs. "Do you see how swollen their little faces are?"

The puppies can barely open their eyes because of the painful skin rashes all over their bodies, she said.

"Someone in the neighborhood has to know who did this," she said.

Silk struggled to understand how anyone could leave the puppies alone in their condition, especially so close to Christmas.

"We can do a lot better than this, Tampa Bay," she said.

The puppies, who rescuers expect to recover and soon be up for adoption, have been named Merry, Noel, Joy and Nick.
