Pinellas Park officer stuns middle school student with Taser

PINELLAS PARK — A school resource officer stunned a middle school student with a Taser while trying to break up a fight between her and another female student on Thursday, police said.

Neither the Pinellas Park officer nor the students involved in the incident were identified. The fight broke out in the bus circle at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School after dismissal, according to Pinellas Park police.

The officer tried to break it up, police said, but one of the students ignored his commands and resisted the officer. She then "verbally threatened the officer, and then attempted to run," police said.

That’s when the officer used his Taser electro-shock device to stun the student. Paramedics treated the student for minor injuries she sustained during the fight, police said, then she was released into the custody of her mother. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office will decide whether that student should face charges.

The other student involved in the fight was able to get onto her school bus and leave campus. The school resource officer and school officials will determine what disciplinary action or charges that student could face, police said.
