Brooksville shelters available to residents bracing from cold weather

BROOKSVILLE — With freezing temperatures looming, Hernando County officials reminded local residents Tuesday of Brooksville shelters available to them, according to a press release from the Emergency Operations Center.

The National Weather Service said overnight temperatures in the Florida peninsula could reach freezing this week through Friday, although officials haven’t issued a watch or warning. The wind chill, they said, could be in the 20- to 30-degree range.

In response, the County directed those seeking shelter to facilities operated by Jericho Road Ministries: a men’s shelter at 1090 Mondon Hill Road, and a women’s shelter called "Mary’s House" at 1163 Howell Road.

The County recommended that area residents avoid leaving pets or plants outside this week, that they close windows or doors near exposed indoor pipes, and that they let a thin trickle of water run from faucets.
