After third fire at former Ybor City bathhouse, arrest is made

TAMPA — A 46-year-old man was arrested Friday and accused of setting fire to a vacant Ybor City bathhouse hit by arson at least two other times earlier this year.

Two Tampa police officers spotted smoke from the vacant building at 1512 E Eighth Ave. around 2:30 a.m. Tampa Fire Rescue was summoned and firefighters extinguished the flames shortly after arriving.

Later, police said Carroll DeMoss was found inside the building. Firefighters also determined that arson was the cause of the fire.

DeMoss faces charges of second-degree arson and burglary causing more than $10,000 damage. He was being held Friday without bail in the Hillsborough County jail.

Investigators estimate this latest fire caused about $3,000 in damages to the building formerly known as the Ybor Resort & Spa, once a popular gay bathhouse. The first fire in March caused about $100,000 in damages, and there was a second one a week later.

Police never made an arrest in either of those cases. It was unclear Friday whether police believe DeMoss is linked to ether fire.
