Gov. Rick Scott made a “Small Business Tour” stop in a Tampa bodega Friday as part of the expanding re-election campaign against his presumed opponent, Charlie Crist.
The venue was the MD Food Market, at 4019 W. Hillsborough Ave., where owner Maikel Duarte opened in a former Sony TV two years ago.
“I started with a watermelon in my hand, selling fruits and vegetables on Lois Avenue,” Duarte said. “Things have grown from there.”
Now the store employs 18 full-time workers. Eventually, he’d like to operate 15 or more stores.
Scott highlighted his lieutenant governor, Carlos Lopez-Cantera, at the event, where both men alternated speaking English and Spanish to a crowd of supporters.
“I grew up working in a grocery store,” Scott told the crowd of supporters. “I love selling things to people.”
After filming some campaign commercials in the site, Scott’s campaign entourage moved on to a similar event in Lakeland.
