After a fierce race that came down to a literal handful of votes, businessman Jay Fant has won the Republican primary in Duval County’s House District 15.
Fant topped attorney Paul Renner by two votes after a recount today.
Fant came out of Tuesday’s primary with a three-vote lead, but The Florida Times-Union reported that the margin was narrowed to two votes today.
Fant posted a statement on his website congratulating Renner for what he described as “well fought” contest.
“This was a tough race in which we agreed more than we disagreed, and I want to continue to work with Paul on the priorities that we share, which include the well being of Florida’s economy and resistance to so much of the Obama agenda,’’ Fant said in the statement.
Renner also sent out a statement wishing Fant success in the Legislature.
“Having grown up in Jacksonville and spent years in public service, both as a Naval officer and a criminal prosecutor, I will continue to look for opportunities to serve our great community,’’ Renner said.
The District 15 race was one of the most closely watched primaries in the state and drew hundreds of thousands of dollars in spending. The seat opened up when Rep. Daniel Davis, R-Jacksonville, announced he would not run for re-election.
Fant is virtually guaranteed of winning the seat in November because two write-ins are the only other candidates.
