More than 700 "sibling" March For Our Lives protests are planned across the U.S. on March 24, including several in Tampa Bay, the same day half a million people are expected to march on Washington, D.C.
Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, including Cameron Kasky, Alex Wind, Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg, began promoting the demonstration days after surviving the Feb. 14 shooting massacre at the school.
More than 2,000 people have RSVP’d via Facebook to attend local demonstrations set to begin at 10 a.m. on March 24 at downtown Tampa’s Kiley Gardens and in front of the Pinellas County Courthouse in St. Petersburg.
Calling for the shooting to be a tipping point for gun legislation, George and Amal Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and companies such as Gucci have donated as much as $500,000 to support the March For Our Lives effort, which is being organized by the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety. Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff and businessman Eli Broad have each pledged $1 million.
Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon is among the celebrities who have pledged to attend the event in Washington.
According to marchforourlives.com, which has a map of planned protests across the country, there are also events planned for Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Brandon and Plant City.
