Police: Suspects dressed as officers try to rob Tampa jewelry store
TAMPA - Police said they are investigating an attempted robbery at a jewelry store this morning in which the thieves were dressed as police officers. Marcelo Suarez was working in Marcelo's Jewelry, 3117 W. Columbus Drive about 8 a.m. when he saw a vehicle pull up on his surveillance system, said Andrea Davis, spokeswoman for the Tampa Police Department. The four-door Saturn had police-type light bars on the dashboard and the four suspects who got out were wearing police clothing, Davis said. Thinking they were police officers, Suarez buzzed the suspects into the store, Davis said.He immediately realized they were not officers and gunfire was exchanged, Davis said. Suarez was not injured. Officers are looking for a green of blue four-door Saturn and reviewing surveillance video.
