Police: Polk County man poured gas on mother, threatened to kill her
A Lake Wales man was arrested today after police say he poured gasoline on his mother and threatened to kill her, police said. Matthew Paul Kelly, 33, is charged with aggravated assault and simple battery. On Tuesday, after running out of gas, Kelly was getting a ride from his mother to his vehicle, when he became agitated, Lake Wales police said. He got so mad that Kelly's mother became concerned for his health and started driving him to Lake Wales Hospital for an evaluation, police said. When Kelly discovered where they were going, he pulled on the steering wheel and got more aggressive, police said. To avoid crashing, Kelly's mother pulled over. Kelly took the keys from the ignition and got out of the vehicle. The two talked and eventually Kelly gave his mother the keys back, police said. But when she told him he needed help, Kelly became enraged and grabbed a small gas can from the floorboard and began to splash the interior of the vehicle and his mother with it, saying "I don't care. I'm going to jail anyway. I'll kill us both," police said. He then reached into his pocket and Kelly's mother thought he was going for his lighter, police said. Kelly's mother left and called police but he was gone before they arrived, police said.
Police located Kelly today and arrested him. Kelly's arrest history includes charges for drug offenses, driving under the influence, battery and resisting arrest.
