Paul's campaign plans USF rally

TAMPA - The Ron Paul campaign will hold a rally at the University of South Florida Sun Dome on Aug. 26, the day before the opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa. USF anticipates "a major rally with thousands of supporters," according to a news release. The event will begin at noon, with doors opening at 11 a.m., and is free and open to the public, the release said. The rally is in addition to a three-day festival planned by Paul supporters, but not sanctioned by Paul himself, to be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds over the weekend prior to the convention.
Paul's campaign has said he won't be attending that event, and instead will appear at his own rally. That's because Paul wants to play down previous conflicts between his supporters and the Republican Party establishment and therefore hopes to control the tone of events in which he participates, his campaign chairman Jesse Benton has said. A news release from the Paul campaign said no further details were available, but it plans to post a website where people can make reservations for the rally. James Davis of the Republican Party's Committee on Arrangements for the convention said the committee, which has the right of first refusal on all public event venues during the convention, has approved use of the Sun Dome for the Paul campaign's rally. The committee never explicitly approved rental of the fairgrounds for the Paul Festival. Instead, the committee allowed the contract between the Fair Authority and the event planners to take effect by declining to pre-empt it during the time period in which it could have done so. A third libertarian-oriented event is also being planned to take place at the Fantasy of Flight tourist attraction in Polk City during the weekend before the convention.
