The letter by Sandra Sawyer ("A dictator of president?" Letter of the Day, June 19) is full of misinformation. She calls President Obama a dictator for allowing young children of illegal aliens, under specific circumstances, to avoid deportation. The president's action in no way violates the Constitution. All presidents beginning with George Washington have used executive orders. Abraham Lincoln used them 48 times, which included the Emancipation Proclamation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt used them 3,522 times.
Sawyer further states that Obama's order made these 800,000 illegal young people "virtually citizens" with the right to vote, which is an extremely ridiculous assertion.
The order applies to people under 30 years of age who were brought to this country at age 16 or younger by immigrant parents; who have lived in this country at least five years with no criminal history; and who have either graduated from a U.S. high school, obtained a GED or served in our military. It gives them the right to a green card instead of deportation. This will entitle them to obtain a driver's license, a job and the right to apply for citizenship, which in most cases takes a minimum of five years. Only when they become citizens will they have the right to vote.
Most of these young people have grown up here and know no other country. Obama should be commended for doing what Congress has failed to do for strictly political reasons.
