Girl Slips Away From PE Class

Published: Sep 6, 2007

TAMPA - A sixth-grader left her physical education class at Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace on Wednesday and was missing in the neighborhood for about 45 minutes.

The student was brought back to school safely by a sheriff's deputy, Hillsborough County school district spokesman Steve Hegarty said.

"She wasn't supervised properly," Hegarty said. The district's professional standards office had been notified, he said. "The PE instructor is going to be interviewed."

It was the second incident of a student in the wrong place in two days, Hegarty said. He said a very young student from Shaw Elementary was supposed to go to an after-school program Tuesday, but the boy took his bus home instead. His mother was not home. It was unclear how the miscommunication happened, Hegarty said, and the principal apologized to the mother.
