Man survives jump from Sunshine Skyway

A 21-year-old man jumped off the Sunshine Skyway bridge Thursday night and survived, officials said. The man, whose name wasn't released, was rescued by St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue firefighters, who approached the man on a boat, officials said. The firefighters located the man on top of rocks at the west side of the bridge. Two divers from the fire department's boat swam to the rocks and made contact with the man, a fire department official said. The firefighters helped place the man on a raft and secured him with a rescue line. They returned to the boat, where paramedics attended to the man.
He was declared a trauma alert and was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The incident occurred about 8:45 p.m., when the man and a woman were driving on the Skyway. The man parked near the center of the span on the northbound lanes of the bridge, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. He got out of the vehicle, jumped and landed in Tampa Bay. He then swam to the rocks that buffer the bridge, the sheriff's office said.
