Lakeland woman wins Hooters swimsuit pageant

A Lakeland woman has been named Miss Hooters International 2014 during the 18th annual swimsuit pageant hosted recently in Las Vegas by the iconic wings restaurant.

Janet Layug, 25, has worked with the Hooters brand for seven years, most recently at her hometown location in north Lakeland, the restaurant chain said.

The Polk State College graduate, who is pursuing a nursing degree at the University of South Florida, finished third last year. She won $30,000 and will serve as a Hooters spokeswoman. Duties will include hosting events and appearing in television commercials.

The pageant was held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas on July 23.

Contestants were selected from more than 18,000 female Hooters employees worldwide. Each competed in local and regional contests to earn one of 100 spots in the international event.

The first runner-up was Rachel Mundwiller, Springfield, Missouri; second runner-up was Meagan Pastorchik, of North Charleston, South Carolina; third runner-up was Ashley Dill, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and fourth runner-up was Sable Robbert, of Fort Lauderdale.

Layug, who is also a fitness model, said winning the crown was “an absolute honor.”

“It’s unreal. I feel like I’m in a dream right now and don’t want to wake up,” she said in a news release.
