State wildlife officials defend bear killings

LAKE MARY – Florida wildlife officials are defending the killing of a half dozen bears following a bear attack on a Lake Mary woman.

Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission today said they had no choice but to put down the bears instead of relocating them.

They say there was nowhere the bears could go in Florida where they wouldn’t risk having contact with humans.

Wildlife officials say the bears have grown accustomed to human food, either from garbage or human feeding.

They say once bears have grown accustomed to human food, they don’t grow out of the behavior.

It was unclear whether the bear that attacked 45-year-old Terri Frana on Saturday was one of those killed.
