A Polk County man was killed Sunday night after he was struck by a car, hours after removing in IV line from his arm and leaving a Haines City hospital where he was a patient.
Polk County deputies say Larry G. Strouse, 48, of Davenport, was killed just after 6 p.m. on U.S. 27.
Deputies say the staff at Heart of Florida Hospital in Haines City reported Strouse missing to Haines City police around 6 p.m. He had been a patient there for several days, but left the hospital for unknown reasons.
Strouse was observed on the east side of U.S. 27 at La Casa Del Sol Boulevard, and stopped in the roadway after crossing through the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 and onto the southbound lanes.
Deputies say he was struck by a 2005 Chrysler driven by 23-year-old Oksana M. Dee, 23, of Davenport.
Strouse was thrown 120 feet and died at the scene, deputies say.
Dee and two passengers, Amelia Cyphert and Dave Richland, were not hurt, deputies say.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, and no criminal charges are anticipated, deputies say.
