More than 500 students will receive their degrees from Eckerd College in a graduation ceremony later this month, but Wednesday was a day for their furry friends to be honored at the school’s annual pet commencement.
Eckerd has a liberal pet policy, with five residential houses and one full complex converted to pet-friendly dorms. Seven cats, three dogs and a rabbit earned their “sheepskin” and four other animals graduated in absentia.
Each pet was escorted across the stage in Fox Hall by their human, and degrees were presented in both names.
Of course, there were treats.
Eckerd students will gather at 8 a.m. May 18 on the South Beach Field for the formal ceremony. Melissa Harris-Perry, host of an MSNBC news and opinion show, will be the speaker.
