Tampa Prep robotics teams quality for state tournament

Two robotics teams from Tampa Prep competed against 17 teams and advanced to the Florida VEX Championships with wins at the qualifier held at Middleton High School on Jan. 25.

Tampa Prep’s team 727B, paired with team 2711Haile 2, advanced in several matches and became tournament champions. Team 727B included ninth- and 10th-graders Nick Murphy, Tristen Mee, Xander Spriggs, and Nick Riddell.

Tampa Prep’s Team 727A, including seniors Pedro Lima, Andre Ruas and Mitchell Overfield, earned the tournament’s design award for writing an automatic autonomous program for a robot.

Both Tampa Prep teams qualified for the state championships.

There will be a Tampa Prep Throwdown on Saturday, a VEX competition with 27 teams from central Florida schools. The event will qualify four more teams for the state championships.

The VEX Robotics Design System offers students a platform for learning about science, technology engineering and math and encourages teamwork, leadership and problem solving.
