TAMPA – Next month, Tampa Bay area residents can walk or run to support local education. The Hillsborough Education Foundation will host its second annual Take Stock in Children Strides for Education 5-kilometer walk/run next month.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 23 at the downtown Forum and will include a “fun run” for elementary school students. Registration opens at 7 a.m.
After runners and walkers cross the finish line, the Hillsborough County PTA/PTSA Council will host a Get Moving Day event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The walk is the foundation’s largest event to raise scholarship funds for Hillsborough public school students, according to a foundation news release.
“By walking with us, we can change the lives of students,” foundation President Phil Jones said in the news release. “It will also encourage our younger students to think about how a college education could alter the course and potential of their lives ahead.”
Middle and high school teams can raise funds for their respective schools and compete for bonus scholarships by raising the most money or having the most walkers on their teams.
The teams who raise the most money can win up to $5,000 in bonus scholarship funds.
Teams with the largest number of walkers are eligible to win between $1,000 and $2,500.
Additionally, the foundation will give away an iPad to the student who raises the most money for his or her school.
Local businesses who form teams may choose to designate their fundraising to a specific school or contribute to the foundation’s general scholarship fund.
