A woman drove over the median of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard this afternoon near Interstate 4 and she struck a Hillsborough County school bus that had only the driver aboard.
About 3:34 p.m., Wendy Sue Wilson, 48, of Tampa, was eastbound on Martin Luther King in a 2000 Ford Escort near Interstate 4 when she then drove over the raised median, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, and headed westbound on the opposite side.
The front of her car then struck the left side of the school bus, causing $20,000 in damage, the FHP said.
Wilson was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she is in serious condition, according to an FHP report. The bus driver, Maria Mendez Medina, 42, of Tampa, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.
The bus from Blake High School had recently dropped off the last student so the only person aboard was the driver, the patrol said.
Wilson is charged with careless driving, according to FHP.
