Apollo Beach Elementary recognized for building character

A Hillsborough County school is one of 29 across the nation to be recognized for putting an emphasis on character education.

Apollo Beach Elementary School is the only one in Florida to be named to the Character Education Partnership’s 2013 National School of Character list. Schools are selected based on the partnership’s 11 principles of effective character education.

To achieve the distinction, the school’s character education committee develops lesson plans and goals, encourages service learning projects, and fosters self-motivation and leadership.

The Character Education Partnership is a nonprofit coalition of organizations and individuals committed to fostering effective character education in the nation’s schools.

Partnership evaluators visited with Apollo Beach Elementary’s staff, students, parents and community members, observing classrooms, lunch, recess and dismissal procedures. One activity Apollo Beach students have done is write acrostic poems about their classmates to practice being kind.

The school will be considered a National School of Character for five years.

Apollo Beach Elementary was recognized at the National Forum on Character Education in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. The Hillsborough County School Board will recognize the school at a meeting Nov. 12.
