A Winter Haven man was arrested early Sunday morning in the stabbing death of his mother, according to the Winter Haven Police Department.
Micah Lee Hobbs, 36, is charged with first-degree murder. He told investigators he stabbed his mother because he was tired of her controlling his money, police said.
Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, Hobbs entered the bedroom of his mother, Eva Marie Hobbs, 57, and began stabbing her with an 11-inch kitchen knife, police said.
Both live at 895 2nd Street SE in Winter Haven.
Eva Marie Hobbs’ mother, Janie Hampton, 83, told police she was awakened by her daughter’s screams of, “Micah, No!” and “Micah is stabbing me with a knife!”
When she got out of her bed to investigate the screams, she saw her grandson standing in the doorway. She pushed Micah Hobbs out of the house, closing the door, police said, and later found her daughter laying on her bed in a pool of blood, according to police.
Police and medical personnel arrived, pronouncing Eva Marie Hobbs dead.
Micah Hobbs was located a short time later at the corner of 2nd Street and Avenue G SE sitting in the roadway laughing and smiling, according to the police. He was taken into custody and remains in the Polk County Jail with no bond.
