Weapons from buy-back event melted down

Hundreds of weapons turned in at a gun buy-back even are on their way to becoming rebar and coat hangers.
The more than 2,500 unwanted firearms turned in during the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s Operation Gun Swap in February met a fiery finish at a steel mill this week, where the rifles, shotguns, and handguns were incinerated in a 3,200-degree furnace.

The packaging, transport and destruction of the unwanted firearms was supervised by a team of sheriff’s detectives.
