Warrant issued for suspect in robbery of Polk deputy
A warrant for arrest was issued Tuesday for a man police accused of stealing the purse and gun of an off-duty Polk County deputy at a supermarket. Winter Haven police identified 22-year-old Damarius Antwun Matthews as the person who snatched Deputy Regina Hulverson’s purse on May 13. The purse contained the deputy’s holstered .380 Ruger, badge and credentials, investigators said. The deputy was entering the Publix, 884 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven, about 6:55 p.m. when Matthews took the purse, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.Matthews was seen fleeing in a 2013 silver Mazda, a rented vehicle that police later found and impounded, authorities said. The warrant charges Matthews with robbery, grand theft of firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and petit theft. He is considered armed and dangerous, the sheriff’s office said. Anyone with information on Matthew's whereabouts was asked to call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
