Two men arrested in fatal Lakeland home invasion

Two men have been arrested in a Sunday home invasion and shooting at a Lakeland home that left one man dead and three wounded, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said

Tobarais Hudson, 25, and Auban Carter, 24, both of Lakeland, were charged in the incident on Chase Road in Lakeland.

About 9 p.m. Sunday, deputies went to a home and learned two men had approached the home where 10 people had gathered, demanding money and drugs.

The intruders were offered a small amount of marijuana and a small amount of money, but the suspects apparently thought there would be a large amounts of money and drugs at the residence, deputies said.

The intruders forced the victims into the home and threatened a female occupant with a gun. Tommy Ussery, 20, stepped between the woman and one of the men, who then put a handgun to Ussery’s head and pulled the trigger. The gun did not fire, however.

The suspects then opened fire with an assault rifle, deputies said.

Kody Zawalski, 20, Lakeland, was fatally shot, deputies said.

Ussery was shot three times and is in critical condition at a local hospital. Levi Atkinson, 20, was shot while attempting to shove the intruders outside. He is also in critical condition at an area hospital, deputies said..

Madison Brown, 18, was grazed by a bullet and was treated and released.

Ussery, Atkinson, and Brown all live at the Chase Road home.

During the investigation, deputies linked Carter to a previous shooting in Lakeland and obtained a warrant for his arrest. They located him, Hudson and a third person at his home. During the arrest, they found weapons that were used in the Chase Home shooting, deputies said.

During an interview, Hudson admitted he and Carter committed the Chase Road home invasion and shooting, deputies said.

Carter and Hudson were taken to the Polk County Jail.

Carter and Hudson were each charged with first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted murder, armed burglary of an occupied dwelling, and possession of firearm by convicted felon.
