TAMPA — Dontae Morris’ trial on charges he murdered two Tampa police officers will be held in Tampa with jurors selected in Orlando, a judge ruled Friday.
Morris could face a death sentence if convicted of murdering officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis during a traffic stop on June 29, 2010.
Circuit Judge William Fuente had earlier said he was planning to hold the trial in Orlando. But after the defense filed a motion asking that jurors be sequestered wherever the trial was, Fuente reconsidered the location.
On Friday, the judge said jury selection will begin Nov. 4 in Orlando, and prospective jurors will be told to expect to be sequestered in Hillsborough County. The trial will begin Nov. 12.
Morris was convicted by another Orange County jury earlier this year of murdering Rodney Jones. That trial also was conducted in Tampa. Morris is serving life for that murder. He faces two additional murder trials after the trial in the police slayings.
