The mother and cousin for actor and professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were seriously injured recently in a head-on crash in Clermont, officials said.
On Aug. 2, a car on U.S. 27 attempting to avoid a traffic stop ran two red lights and crossed the center lane before striking the vehicle occupied by Ata Johnson and Lina Fanene, police told television station News 13 in Orlando.
The fleeing driver was not named by police but faces a charge of driving under the influence, according to News 13. Police are waiting to see if the State Attorney’s Office will approve a warrant for the driver’s arrest.
Ata Johnson, the wrestler’s mother, is a former Tampa resident. Fanene is also a professional wrestler. Both were hospitalized with serious injuries but are now home recovering.
They had just attended a family charity event in Minneola, a nearby Lake County town.
“My first reaction was to find the person who did this and do unrelenting harm to them,” Dwayne Johnson wrote in a Facebook post. “But then you realize the most important thing is that my family lived thru this and we can hug each other that much tighter these days.”
On Sunday, Dwayne Johnson tweeted that the crash was “100% preventable.”
