Two Lakeland teens were charged today in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy in an apparent gang-related incident.
Lakeland police say Damarco Powell was shot in the back of the head and his body was discovered in a wooded area in the 1300 block of Atline Road in Lakeland on Saturday about 5 a.m., two hours after his mother, Tiffany Powell Humphries, reported him missing.
According to witnesses, Powell and 16-year-old boy Tyler Knight were part of a gang known as Armed And Dangerous (AAD).
Investigators determined Powell threatened Knight and another teen, saying he was going to “set them up” in a text message.
As the three walked through the wooded area to confront another gang, Knight shot Powell in the back of the head with a handgun, according to the arrest affidavit.
The other teen was charged with providing false information by telling detectives he was home at the time of the shooting, according to the arrest affidavit.
The teens were arrested late Monday night. TBO.com is not identifying the second suspect because of his age, and because he was not charged with a violent crime.
