A Tampa woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in the deaths of two teens who were struck on a moped in October.
Amanda Diaz, 23, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and injury, and driving without a valid driver’s license. She is being held on $19,000 bond at the Hillsborough County Jail.
The Oct. 6 crash, just south of the Dale Mabry Highway overpass at Busch Boulevard, resulted in the deaths of 16-year-old Michael Garcia and 14-year-old Claudia Gelpi, both of Tampa.
Garcia and Gelpi both were passengers on the moped, which was being driven by Cameron Michael Maddox, 19, of Tampa. Maddox suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The 2013 Kyoto moped was struck from behind by a 2010 Hyundai Accent being driven by Diaz around 11:30 p.m., troopers said.
Garcia was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital, troopers said, and Gelpi was struck by a third vehicle as she laid in the center lane and died at the scene.
Maddox and the two passengers were heading north on Dale Mabry ahead of and slower than Diaz’s 2010 Hyundai Accent, troopers said.
Diaz didn’t see the moped and rear-ended the bike, troopers said.
The three moped riders were not wearing helmets, troopers said.
