Tampa father faces charges in stabbing, baby abduction

The father of a baby was arrested early Friday after police said he stabbed the mother's new boyfriend and took the child from her Tampa apartment. A short time later, relatives were attacking Jorge Torres, 25, at another address when officers arrived to arrest him and recover the 4-month-old baby, police said. According to police, 21-year-old Jainese Cruz was in her home at Courtney Cove Apartments, 5510 N. Himes Ave., Thursday night with her baby and boyfriend, 37-year-old Alexander Santiago. According to police, Torres knocked on the door, and when Cruz opened it, Torres pushed past her. Torres had a knife and demanded that Cruz give him their baby, police said.
Santiago stood up and Torres stabbed him in the upper back, police said. Torres grabbed the infant and drove away from apartment complex, police said. Police were called at 11:26 p.m., and officers began a search of addresses given to them by Cruz's relatives. Eventually, officers responded to 7316 S. Sherrill St., where they located Torres and baby. About the same time, family members arrived, ran at the suspect and began punching him, police said. Police intervened and took Torres into custody. The baby was not harmed and returned to Cruz, police said. Santiago was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. Torres, of 2902 W. Cherry St., faces charges of burglary, aggravated battery, interference with child custody, battery (domestic violence), possession of marijuana and resisting arrest without violence.
