A grand jury today indicted two men accused in a 2013 drug deal robbery that took the life of a 19-year-old Riverview man, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Paul N. McDonald Jr., 22, and Christian White, 22, of Riverview, were both charged with first degree murder and armed robbery in the death of Richard A. Russell, who was shot outside 10426 Hunters Haven Blvd. last August.
According to an arrest affidavit, Russell and another man drove to the area of Early Run Lane and Ravens Nest in the South Pointe development on Aug. 3 to buy drugs from Garrett Jay Boone, who was 18 at the time.
As Boone approached the vehicle to make the deal, McDonald and White emerged from the bushes in an attempt to rob Russell and the driver of the car, deputies said. The driver sped away, and the two gunmen opened fire, striking Russell in the upper torso.
The driver, whose name was not released because he is a witness, found a deputy working off duty at South Pointe Park. The deputy called for an ambulance and provided first aid until paramedics arrived. Russell was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Boone was arrested shortly after the shooting and admitted to planning and carrying out the armed robbery, deputies said.
