Suspect in Winter Haven shooting surrenders

A man who was sought in a Monday shooting that injured two people has turned himself in to authorities, Winter Haven police said.

Byron Nigel Swan, 25, who was wanted for three counts of attempted first-degree murder, was taken to the Polk County Jail after surrendering this morning, police said.

Police said that about 5 p.m. Monday, Swan approached a vehicle with three men inside in the area of 5th Street Northeast and Avenue O Northeast in Winter Haven. A door was open because the men were talking to someone outside the vehicle.

According to police, Swan began firing into the vehicle. He was recognized by one of the occupants of the vehicle.

Two of the occupants were struck and the third drove the injured men to the Winter Haven Hospital Emergency Room. One victim was treated and released, and the other was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He was last reported to be in critical but stable condition.
