A Plant City man was arrested Wednesday morning and charged in a fatal shooting earlier this month, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Robert Alton Henderson, 21, was arrested after he crashed his vehicle as he was being pursued by deputies in Plant City, the sheriff’s office said. Henderson has been charged with felony murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, grand theft auto and criminal mischief, the sheriff’s office said.
On Aug. 8, Shelby Jones, 52, and his brother were together in the shed of Jones’ home, 11024 Old Hillsborough Ave., Seffner.
It was near 11:30 p.m. when a man wearing a black cap and a black bandanna that covered his face entered the shed.
He told them to “give it up,” the sheriff’s office said. He struck Jones’ brother with a firearm and then turned and shot Jones in the chest, the sheriff’s office said.
The shooter ran from the scene.
People who know Henderson contacted the sheriff’s office saying that he told them he had shot Jones and had provided specific information that only the shooter would know, the sheriff’s office said.
Henderson was named a suspect. He was spotted at around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday as he was driving a stolen pickup truck in the area of Knights Griffin Road and Cooper Road, the sheriff’s office said.
When Henderson recognized that he was being followed by sheriff’s deputies, he drove off and crashed into a tree, the sheriff’s office said.
He then exited the vehicle, ran into a wooded area and got in a pond, where detectives captured him, the sheriff’s office said.
