Police: Subject in custody after St. Pete teen shoots cousin

St. Petersburg police are searching for a 14-year-old boy they said accidentally shot his 13-year-old cousin in the chest.

The girl was brought to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg about 5 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to her chest. She underwent successful surgery and was listed in good condition, police said. She was expected to survive.

At the hospital, the boy separated from his family after going with them to the emergency room. Detectives were in the process of locating him and the weapon, police said.

On Wednesday morning, police said they have a subject in custody and were conducting interviews. No names were released.

The shooting appears to be accidental, and the gun went off while the boy was trying to clean it in a bathroom at the girl's home, police said.

The girl's mother, who brought her daughter to the emergency room, told investigators she was home with several children, including her daughter and the 14-year-old boy.

The mother was in the kitchen when she heard a gunshot in another part of the house, at 3917 Elkcam Blvd. S.E., St. Petersburg.

She learned that her daughter had been shot while standing in her bedroom.

The mother gathered all the children, including the boy, and drove to the emergency room.

While driving to the hospital, the woman was involved in a minor hit-and-run crash that is being investigated, police said.

After the boy separated from his family, the hospital was placed on lockdown. It appears that he left the hospital on his own and his whereabouts are unknown, police said. Officers are working with the family to locate the boy.

Police don't know how the teen obtained the gun.

Anyone who has information on the boy's location can contact police at (727) 893-7780.
