Two Tampa men were arrested Friday after taking deputies on a chase that ended with the crash of a stolen car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 1:36 p.m., a tag reader alerted deputies to a stolen vehicle on 15th Street in Tampa. When deputies approached the vehicle driven by Reginald E. Kirkland, 20, of Tampa, he sped off, then stopped near the intersection of 140th Avenue and fled on foot, deputies said.
That’s when deputies say that passenger Craigory Glenn Reeves, 22, of Tampa, jumped into the empty driver’s seat and sped off. He struck a telephone pole, continued south on 15th Street, then crashed into a fire hydrant and street sign near 137th Avenue, deputies said.
Reeves fled on foot and was quickly caught by a K-9, deputies said. Deputies arrested Kirkland a short time later at one of his previously known addresses.
Both men were charged with grand theft auto, resisting arrest, and driving with a suspended license. Reeves was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, after deputies said they found a stolen gun inside the vehicle.
