Sarasota suspect tells police: 'I smoke weed'

A Sarasota man faces a drug charge after officers approached him in a park over the weekend and he said, “I smoke weed.”

Charles E. Williams, 41, 5811 5th E, Bradenton, has been charged with felony possession of crack cocaine, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Officers were on patrol about 2 p.m. Saturday in the area of Whitaker Park, 1401 North Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota when they saw two† people sitting at a table in the north end of the park.

As officers approached,† they saw Williams turn around and drop a Marlboro cigarette box, according to police.† Officers told Williams he dropped his cigarettes, and he said,† “I don't smoke cigarettes, I smoke weed.”

Officers opened the box and found a small, blue-colored transparent baggie containing what appeared to be four† pieces of suspected crack cocaine, a police release said. A† field test confirmed the substance was cocaine.

Williams was placed under arrest for possession of crack cocaine and taken to the Sarasota County Jail.
