A purse snatching in St. Pete Beach this afternoon led to a chase and the arrests of four suspects, Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies said.
According to deputies, about 2:40 p.m., the victim, a woman, was sitting in a vehicle at 210 Isle Drive when she was approached by a male suspect who asked her to roll her window down and initially asked for directions. The suspect then pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded the victim’s purse.
The victim sounded the vehicle’s horn to attract attention. The suspect then reached into the vehicle, grabbed the victim’s purse and fled in a blue Honda CRV, deputies said.
A deputy saw the suspect vehicle eastbound on the Pinellas Bayway and tried to stop the vehicle, but it eluded the deputy and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit entered a residential zone in the area of 38th Way South and 50th Avenue. At one point the vehicle tried to perform a U-turn and was struck by the deputy cruiser. The suspect vehicle’s airbag deployed and the vehicle was disabled. Four suspects then fled on foot.
Deputies aided by St. Pete police and the K-9 units of both agencies tracked the suspects, who were apprehended within an hour and a half.
