BROOKSVILLE — A Powell Middle School crossing guard was arrested Sunday on charges of sexual battery of a person 12-years-old or older.
An arrest report shows James Thomas Woods, 69, of Brooksville, and his wife were caring for a woman who had several medical issues earlier this month.
The report says Woods molested the woman while she was sleeping in the same bed as he and his wife, and while she was sedated by the medication “Soma.”
The woman woke up to the assault, and tried to make Woods stop, but was unable to resist or speak because she was still feeling the effects of the medication, according to the report.
Woods told detectives that the woman stayed at his home, and that on three to four occasions he made inappropriate sexual contact with her, according to the report.
Woods told detectives he believed the woman wanted this to take place, and said he knew the medications she was on made her “groggy” and “incoherent,” the report said.
Woods has been a crossing guard at Powell Middle School for three years, according to the sheriff’s office, and also conducted traffic at Northcliffe and Mariner boulevards.
The sheriff’s office said Woods has not been a crossing guard at any other school, and his employment has since been terminated.
Woods was arrested Sunday and charged with one count of sexual battery. He was held at the Hernando County Jail, and posted $10,000 bail later that same day.
Woods has no previous arrests in Hernando County, according to jail records.
