A Polk County man was sentence to life in prison Tuesday after his conviction in the shooting death of a Lakeland police officer.
Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty for Kyle Williams, 21, who was found guilty last week of murdering Officer Arnulgo Crispon in December 2011.
The jury who rendered the verdict needed four hours to recommend a life sentence. Circuit Judge Donald Jacobson followed the panel’s direction, sentencing Williams to life without the possibility of parole.
According to court testimony, Crispin, 25, was attempting to perform a pat-down search of Williams and four other youths at a Lakeland park when Williams shot the officer in the head.
