Police: Man killed officer's son in East Tampa

A Tampa man faces murder charges in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend at an East Tampa apartment complex this morning.

Gregory Charlemagne, 30, of 2530 West Union Street, was charged with second degree murder in the shooting of James Williams, 28, during an altercation that happened before 6 a.m. at Park Terrace Apartments at 5111 Palm Park Court, police said.

Williams' home address was not released because he is the son of a Tampa police officer, police said.

Police say Charlemagne showed up at the apartment where his former girlfriend of seven years, Miriame Bernard, was living with their two children, and where Bernard's new boyfriend, Williams, was also staying.

Bernard came out of her bedroom after hearing a noise and saw Charlemagne, who pushed her against a wall, police said. Williams came out of the bedroom to intervene, and Bernard took her children, ages 4 and 6, from their bedroom and fled the apartment, police said.

A brief fight ensued and Williams was shot dead, police said.

Charlemagne fled the scene but turned himself in a short time later. He admitted to the shooting during an interview with detectives, police said.
