A Pasco County man has become the fifth person convicted in an identity theft scheme in Missouri.
Federal prosecutors in St. Louis say 33-year-old Dwayne Denard Johnson of Wesley Chapel, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of aggravated identity theft. Sentencing is Nov. 26.
Johnson’s wife, Tania Henderson, led the tax fraud scheme from their home. She pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Three others were also convicted and sentenced.
Authorities say the thieves stole the identities of more than 400 people – some of whom were dead – and filed fraudulent tax returns in their names, generating more than $1.8 million in refunds. Henderson used a network of relatives and friends to collect tax refund money.
