Motorcyclist killed in collision on U.S. 41

A motorcyclist is dead after a collision this afternoon on U.S. Highway 41 near Apollo Beach, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 1:35 p.m., a 2012 Suzuki motorcycle driven by Angel Maldonado, who turned 48 today, of Homestead was southbound in the median lane of U.S. 41 at approximately 55 mph. Meanwhile, a 2008 Ford Explorer driven by Walter F. Wagner, 86, of Apollo Beach was headed west on Pennsylvania Avenue in his 2008 Ford Explorer.

Wagner failed to stop at a stop sign, entering Maldonado’s path, deputies said. The motorcyclist applied his brakes, leaving 80 feet of skid marks before striking the Explorer in its driver rear side.

Maldonado, who was wearing his helmet, died at the scene, deputies said.

The investigation is continuing.
